post - birth : abdominal separation

/ Thursday, May 24, 2018 /

last weekend - i had a change of view from my usual "me time" view. my usual me time view would be me, having a foot massage, listening to calming songs with a book in hand, and green tea by my side. my fav masseuse, Quinny, would know exactly how i like her to massage me. i come to her every fortnight almost begging her to fix my beaten self. haha

anyway, last weekend, i made an appointment at the Body & Birth Physiotherapy, somewhere up north of brisbane, for some much needed fixing of my abs. i wish i am at the point of my life where my posts are some times sponsored giving out infos like these to you guys, but no, not there yet in life, haha, this is totally not a sponsored post, and im just giving them a shout for the excellent service i received.

so i was discussing ( read: pestering ) with Azhar about a month ago on me starting horse riding again. i love riding and just spending time with these creatures, and ive been off it for quite a while now, and this time if i start i get to do it with Huda which would be so fun to do. ive always wanted to ride with a friend. back in Adelaide it was just me by myself on weekends, or the last time we went i already had Hamza, so Azhar would drive us all together and they'd watch me ride.

Azhar finally gave me the green light to start my lessons again but with one condition. he told me to check on my abdominal separation and pelvic floor muscles to ensure all those are in tact and i wont be hurting myself unnecessarily with the sport. so i did..and i wasnt really looking forward to these sessions, when i think of phsyio i picture, a room with mirrors on the wall, and some bars for you to balance on while you walk, and all other equipments everywhere. basically like a gym but just emptier. haha.

but it wasnt the case for this gem right here. i walked into a nice, wooden house, which obviously they turned into their business place, was greeted by a very nice lady who then told me to take my shoes off and make my way inside. i was in this pretty living room for a good 5 minutes ( i was early ), just taking it all in. i could make tea or coffee or water if i wanted to but was fasting, so nahh. maybe next appointment. but just the ambience of this place completely threw me off guard. i wasnt prepared for this. this was just so nice.

my physiotherapist Kate, came and greeted me after, and we spent a good hour chatting and doing some exercises in this beautiful treatment room. it was such a nice day. the info she gave me about pelvic floor muscles, and abdominal separation was so easy to understand. i did some reading before i came but couldn't quite picture how the muscles looked like and how it would feel when these muscles are being put to use, she showed me using a diagram and also a pelvic model.

the treatment i received was for my diastasis recti. the separation of the abdomen muscles usually happens during pregnancy to allow baby's growth. post birth - some women find that the separation lessens and the abdominal muscles pulls back in together nicely, if you're like me, my muscles have still a gap in between due to the connective tissue in the midline tummy still stretched apart. i needed some work to lessen the gap.

i think kate mentioned that people can get diastasis recti not only during pregnancy, but even men can alsobe diagnosed with it due to poor alignment or improper excercises done..

how did i know i had diastasis recti ?

i noticed my tummy was protruding more than usual. i also was being abit silly starting some light abs exercises and doing planks which i thought were totally harmless at 3 months postpartum. you might wanna give yourself a break and not do any of these exercises, because then you'll end up like me. i wasnt in any pain but the protrusion really bothered me because i knew it was supposedly not make my tummy look anything like it was.

anyway, from that one hour session i took home with me 4 basic exercises to do until the next 3 weeks or so, ill be seeing her again to check on my progress.

it was funny because i was telling azhar how unnecessary phsyio would be for me, as horse riding would be training me to tuck all my muscles in especially my core while trotting and cantering, but Kate said it would actually make it a lot tricky if i didn't know which muscles i was contracting or holding. especially with my weak pelvic floor muscles. with all the hitting on the saddle while trotting would just make it worst.

anyhoo.

that was my last weekends story.

it was amazing and i cant wait to go back in three weeks time !

hope everyone is having a blessed ramadhan
